Jessie de Salis

Her sensational use of colour and the hints of art deco make Jessie's designs a treat for the eyes. They are the perfect way to add a contemporary edge to traditional rooms whether its curtains, cushions, lamps or upholstery.

I actually know about Jessie because she is my friend's cousin. This friend, Alice, who I met on my art foundation course, now has a degree in textiles and she helps Jessie with printing and sewing. Jessie is clearly a talented printmaker who loves what she does and this love comes beaming out of her printed fabrics. We get a taste of the 1920s with certain motifs, but the patterns manage to be lively and charmingly undone, rather than rigid like some art deco designs. You can also see a clear 70s influence in some of the simpler prints which would be perfect for adding a vibrant feature to a room.

One element of these products not to be overlooked is the linen itself. Its beautiful texture and the way the ink sits on its surface and sinks into the fibres makes for a beautiful effect. Chosen for its feel and sustainability, linen is such a pleasing material to bring into your home because of how wonderfully tactile it is. Not only this, but the hands-on process of printing with silk screens creates irregularities and quirks, meaning each piece is truly unique.

At the heart of Jessie and Alice's work is making sure that they have as much control over the production process as possible, ensuring the least damage is done to the natural world. Jessie and Alice clearly have a future in textiles which is just as bright as these exciting designs!
